What is the Summer Work Travel Program?

The Summer Work Travel USA Program is a U.S. Department of State BridgeUSA exchange program that provides international university students with an opportunity to live, work, and experience American culture during their academic break.

The program is designed as a cultural exchange experience, not simply a temporary employment program. Participants are expected to work alongside American employees, interact regularly with U.S. citizens, and experience American culture both at and outside the workplace.

What Types of Jobs Are Available for the Program?

Summer Work Travel positions must be temporary or seasonal and must provide participants with opportunities to communicate and interact with U.S. citizens and experience American culture during their employment.

Common positions for Summer Work Travel participants include:

Hospitality: Hotel Staff, Housekeeping, Front Desk, Guest Services, Laundry, Resort Operations

Food & Beverage: Server, Host / Hostess, Food Runner, Busser, Dishwasher, Kitchen Assistant, Restaurant Support

Tourism & Attractions: Attraction Attendant, Ticketing, Guest Services, Retail, Recreation Staff, Seasonal Resort Positions

Outdoor & Recreation: Lifeguard, Pool Attendant, Recreation Staff, Seasonal Outdoor Positions

Why Recruit Thai University Students?

1. Two Recruitment Seasons for Thai University Students

One of the key advantages of recruiting university students from Thailand is the availability of two distinct recruitment seasons that align with different academic calendars at Thai universities. This gives U.S. employers greater flexibility when planning seasonal staffing needs and allows employers to recruit Thai students for different parts of the U.S. tourism and summer season.

Season Student Availability Best For
Spring March 7 – July 7 Early Spring through early Summer staffing
Summer May 7 – September 7 Peak Summer and seasonal staffing

2. Strong Service-Oriented Mindset

Thai culture is widely associated with hospitality, politeness, and respect toward others. Many Thai students are familiar with service-oriented environments and understand the importance of:

    • Polite communication
    • Customer service
    • Teamwork
    • Respect for supervisors and coworkers
    • Maintaining a positive attitude
    • Taking care of guests and customers

3. Motivated to Improve Their English

For many Thai participants, one of the primary reasons for joining the Work Travel program is to improve their English communication skills through real-world experience. This creates an environment where students are motivated to communicate, learn, and adapt.

4. University Students With a Strong Learning Mindset

Thai participants are actively enrolled in universities and are pursuing degrees in a wide range of fields. This makes the program particularly suitable for employers who value employees who are willing to learn new tasks and adapt to a new working environment.

5. Respectful and Team-Oriented

Thai students are generally accustomed to working within group environments at university and are often comfortable working as part of a team.

They understand the importance of:

    • Following workplace instructions
    • Respecting supervisors
    • Supporting coworkers
    • Cooperating with team members
    • Maintaining a positive workplace environment

For seasonal businesses, where employees need to work efficiently as a team during busy periods, these characteristics can be valuable.

6. Adaptable to Multicultural Workplaces

Thai students joining the BridgeUSA program are already choosing to live and work outside their home country. This experience can help students become more adaptable and open-minded when working in an international environment.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย (FAQ)

Who are the Thai students recruited by New Step?

New Step recruits full-time university students from Thailand who are interested in gaining international work experience and experiencing American culture. Students are screened based on their English communication skills, qualifications, interests, and suitability for the available positions.

When are Thai students available to work?

Thai students can participate in two recruitment seasons. The Spring Season runs from March 7 to July 7, while the Summer Season runs from May 7 to September 7. Individual participation dates depend on each student's eligibility, academic schedule, visa status, and designated U.S. sponsor approval.

What types of jobs can Thai students do?

Thai students can work in a variety of temporary or seasonal positions, particularly in hospitality, tourism, food service, recreation, attractions, retail, and other customer-service industries. All positions must meet the requirements of the BridgeUSA Summer Work Travel program and be reviewed by the designated U.S. sponsor.

How well do Thai students speak English?

Students are required to have sufficient English proficiency to communicate and interact in an English-speaking workplace. New Step conducts English screening and considers each student's communication ability when matching them with suitable positions, particularly for customer-facing roles.

Can employers interview students before making a hiring decision?

Yes, employers can interview qualified candidates before making a hiring decision. New Step coordinates the interview process and communication with students in Thailand, allowing employers to evaluate candidates based on their qualifications, communication skills, and suitability for the position.

Does the employer need to provide housing?

Housing requirements depend on the specific position and program arrangements. Employers are encouraged to provide or assist with safe, affordable, and reasonably accessible housing. Housing details, including rent, deposit, location, transportation, and other costs, should be clearly communicated to students before they accept the position.

Who handles the J-1 visa process?

The designated U.S. sponsor administers the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program and issues Form DS-2019 to eligible participants. New Step assists students with preparation and coordinates with the sponsor and employer throughout the recruitment and placement process.

What happens if a student has a problem during the program?

New Step works together with the employer and designated U.S. sponsor to address program-related concerns. The U.S. sponsor provides ongoing program support and monitors participants' health, safety, and welfare throughout their participation.

What happens if a student quits or leaves the job?

If a student leaves their position, New Step and the designated U.S. sponsor will work with the employer and student to understand the situation and follow the appropriate program procedures. Any employment change must be handled in accordance with the sponsor's requirements.

How early should employers contact New Step?

We recommend employers begin the recruitment process as early as possible before the desired season. Early planning provides more time for job approval, candidate recruitment, interviews, visa processing, and pre-departure preparation.
